I Shall Explain in Simple Words (2020)

On Folds and Shadows

In the fall of 2019, I became obsessed with origami. Ten-centimeter squares of paper, no room for compromise. (I forbade myself scissors.) Guided by an endless stream of online tutorials, I folded many childish little things. Then, to erase my traces, I unfolded each one, piece by piece.

No matter how tedious, repetitive, twisted, or surprisingly delightful the process was, I photographed the creases they left behind.

Light grazes “mountains;” shadow sinks into “valleys.” Depth lies on the surface. They became sheets of paper — quiet answers to questions I asked during a midlife crisis.

A diary.
